During the rainy season (from June to September, usually) it is very common to find winged ants that we locally call “chicatanas”. These ants are from a genre of leaf cutting ants and live throughout this whole region. The name chicatana comes from the nahuatl word tzicatl: big and atl: ant. The chicatanas resemble a lot to bees in their organization: there is a queen, warriors and many workers.
