The FDA classifies insects under “natural or unavoidable defects” in foods, and sets maximum levels, according to Curtis Allen, an FDA spokesman.
Companies that violate the standards must report corrective measures within 15 days. If an FDA inspection determined that a product is so contaminated that it’s unsafe to consume, the agency can request in court that it be removed from the market, Allen says.
